With 48 in attendance, the first (now annual) TechFest 2008 was applauded as a complete success. We will begin planning the 2009 TechFest at Power Users Conference in Connecticut in September, so bring your ideas.
2009 will be bigger, better, and hit all levels of technology surrounding the Sagitta Agency.
The key to learning is to always take what you learned and forever continue to raise the bar for ourselves, our agencies, our vendors, and our Users Groups. TechFest 2008 was born at the last minute to fill a need to extend some of the technical training we have been missing. The conversations and needs of everyone who attended will continue to breed education events in the near future for SAUCI, AMSUG, and the local chapters to ensure the training we are able to offer is in line with the technical needs and challenges of the agencies.
A big Thank You goes out to everyone who made this event possible:
-
You – We could not have done it without YOU
-
The SAUCI Board and Volunteers. This is the greatest “Ger er Done” group of people I have ever worked with.
-
AMS Services and Bill Henson – Without Bill Henson, many of us would still be in the dark about how Sagitta works, and frankly, I believe he is the glue that keeps it all together for us and his staff back in Windsor. We can’t thank him enough.
-
McQueary Henry Bowles Troy – For the extra servers, workstations, human resources, and hosting the meeting facilities.
-
Artizan Internet Services, Entrinsik, and MITS. These companies released some of their most valuable players to get in front of us. As difficult as it is for agencies to let their IT Staff out, it is also difficult for these companies to release their technical staff. AMS has been doing it for years, and we are raising the bar to the vendors as well to open these folks up to us at the Tech and Power Users events in the future.
-
AMSUG – For their support of all of us at both a local and national level.
-
Johnmichael Monteith – JP is always raising the bar and he is always in the Most Valuable Player category in my book.

12:00 to 2:00 - Entrinsik Informer How to and User Meeting Open to All. --
Go through the hands on install process for Informer and build reports. See how other agencies have solved business problems with this product. Discuss database options, and how the Users Group will host a community server to share and pull report definitions. Get to work with one of the programmers from Informer and discuss the future of the technology. This will be hands on and everyone should leave with a clear understanding of the structure and installing and evaluating the trial in their agency. This is not currently available for online agencies, but they are in the works.
2:00 to 5:00 The Sagitta File System. -- Bill Henson, Director of Development, AMS
Learn the basics on the Universe Database Structure, and how and where AMS stores data. Leave with the tools to understand where the data is stored and how it is related. Learn the relationships and differences between the IBM Universe Database and other database flavors and all of the advantages we have over other systems. This class will give the user a clear understanding of the Sagitta Data Structure and basics of the Universe Database.
2:00 to 5:00 (Depending on enrollment) Sagitta Disaster Recovery Lab. -- Todd Doster, McQueary Henry Bowles Troy LLP
Understand the backup methods of Sagitta, and go through the recovery process. See how to handle and process backup to file and utilize NFS and Windows Unix Services, use a licensed test system and keep it updated with live data, and use commands like rdump to backup to the tape drive on another system. This lab will give the user a chance to become more comfortable with the backup and restore process for Sagitta.
Friday
7:00 a.m. Breakfast
8:00 - 11:00 - Sagitta Dictionaries Unleashed -- Bill Henson, Director of Development, AMS
This is a much deeper hands on look at using dictionaries and the GEM.DATA.SQL Account. Instead of building all of those complicated joins in your ODBC Reporting, add the fields directly to the table you are pulling from. Once you have a clear understanding of how Universe stores files and how data is related, you will be able to use these methods to create and solve many business problems with simple ODBC Reporting. You will build and test your dictionaries hands on.
11:00 - 12:00 Lunch
12:00 - 2:00 - Hands on SQL Dictionaries and LAB -- Bill Henson, Director of Development, AMS
Take what we learned earlier and work together solving business problems that you come in with. We will build an Aged A/R Report using dictionaries, create some instances for date comparison logic, and a few other surprises. You dream it, we will build it together in this lab
2:00 - 5:00 - Using the Power of MS SQL to data warehouse your Sagitta Data -- Johnmichael P. Monteith, Parker, Smith & Feek
Learn some of the tips and tricks of moving and reporting data within the SQL environment. See how you can expound upon this data and key various other applications to centrally report and/or build applications from.
6:00 - ? Dinner and Fun
Saturday
7:00 a.m. Breakfast
8:00 - 11:00 Web Services Explained. -- Bill Henson, Director of Development, AMS, Todd Doster, McQueary Henry Bowles Troy LLP
This will be a hands on look at setting up and using the Web Services from AMS. We will share a simple Visual Basic Application that searches for and loads a client on a form and allows you to update the database when you change and update the data on the form. You will need to download and install the free version of Visual Basic 2005 or 2008 from Microsoft. The basis is to clearly understand the basic process and rules for web services and see it in action as you write your own simple application. Bill will also explain the licensing for Web Services, including vendor licensing when you encourage you vendors to take advantage of the SDK for Sagitta Integration.
11:00 - 12:00 Development Update, and licensing Q&A -- Bill Henson, Director of Development, AMS
What is AMS Development working on now? Do you have any questions about the Sagitta Licensing Model and compliance when using technologies such as Web Services, etc? And we will play Win Bill Henson's Money. In this game you will go head to head with Bill Henson on a few technology trivia questions.
12:00 - Open Forum and Lab as late as you like.
